Charles Ives - Variations on "America"

When Ives composed this in the 1890s (at age 17!), there was no official national anthem.  "My Country Tis Of Thee" was generally recognized as the de facto anthem, and Ives used it as a basis for this when he wrote it for an Independence Day celebration.

He was organist at his church, and his father didn't let him play it often since it made some of the kids there laugh.  It's a fun piece for a long Independence Day weekend.

Welcome everyone to the TFB Armorer's Bench ! I recently spotted a Sten Mk2 kit for a decent price and couldn't resist picking it up. These kits used to be available for a couple hundred bucks, but lately they've shot up in price as they've become less and less common. People buy these because they're simple to bring back to life in semi-auto form with some new parts and a little know-how. It seemed like a fun project. Mine arrived soaked in thick cosmoline in a plastic bag, which turned out to be the perfect test case for the RCBS Ultrasonic Cleaner 2 .

I am not a religious type although I was once upon a time decades ago. Still now and again, I pray or cross myself when calamity strikes. Well it struck in Texas this weekend in an event that evidently caught all by surprise. For a river to crest 30 feet above normal after only 45 minutes of rain is a cataclysmic event, I think one that could not be anticipated. As you must be aware, if you have read or heard the news, many people perished as a result of these storms and many more were injured. The hardest hit place appears to be Camp Mystic, a sleep away from home, summer camp. There are still over 25 (the article says 27) young girls missing from that camp who were swept away by flood waters. I, for one, am praying that they find at least some, if not all alive, but my hopes for either happening are low. As I cannot do much else, I will be praying for the missing campers, their families and loved ones. Even if you don't believe in a higher power, maybe you too can offer up a prayer or three for these young girls. I mean, who knows, you could be wrong about that higher power and even if you are right and there is not one, how can a saying prayer hurt. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers please.
 
Of course, you can also do something else to help and that would be to make a donation to a disaster relief type organization, something like The Salvation Army or The American Red Cross and I am sure you can think of others. I just made a donation to the Salvation Army. I prefer to give to them as opposed to the American Red Cross because more of any donated funding goes to actual charitable work done by them, and nowhere nearly as much goes to advertising or to pay their CEOs compensation as it does with the Red Cross, in my understanding. Yet, I think either is usually a big help in such situations. Maybe you can give something too, to a disaster relief organization that offers help in such drastic situations.

On June 11, 1942, disease, and perhaps an increasing desire not to use one’s own hand to wipe one’s nether regions, drove Lt. Cmdr. James Coe of the submarine Skipjack to send an “urgent” message to the powers that be.

Since July 1, 1941, a requisition had been submitted for 150 rolls of toilet paper to replenish the dwindling supply aboard the Skipjack. However, as the boat patrolled the Pacific, no sign of the all-important bathroom item appeared — even as other war materiel came in.

The TP was needed because crews ate very well when out at sea.  I've posted Tasting History episodes before, and this one does not disappoint.  I'd eat that in a New York minute.

NFA Items

 With the passage of Frump's Big Beautiful Bill, some provisions are starting to come to light. It appears that the bill eliminated the excise tax on short-barreled rifles and on suppressors.  I'm sure that the provisions will flesh themselves out in the coming weeks, but I admit that I am intrigued.  The items will still have to be regulated, but that $200 tax is gone.

I am intrigued. I have long thought that a rimfire with a 12 inch barrel and a suppressor would be the cats meow for small game and varmints.  And, if what I'm hearing about the tax is true, then the price of such a firearm just dropped by $400.

I happen to own a Ruger 10/22 that would be a perfect candidate for such a project.  I admit freely that I am totally ignorant about the various vendors of suppressors.  I don't think that I am looking for total silence (I know that is a pipe-dream), but a marked decrease in decibels would be a treat.

Suppressor and Short Barrreled Rifle Tax Now Zero

The OBBB had a provision lowering the transfer tax for suppressors,  short barreled rifles, and the odd "any other weapon" category.  I attended a 4th of July party at my daughter's house.  I was surprised and pleased that our youth pastor,  who is Navajo, knew about th4 change.  (Like many other patriotic young men, his has been a life full of things that go boom!

The reduction of the tax to $0 does not means you can just buy or build one.  The existing, not terribly difficult background check and tax stamp requirements are still there.  (A tax stamp promised on collecting a tax that is now $0, just screams for a legal challenge. )  I would prefer all of these were removed from NFA regulation, but take the victories where you get them.

An investigation found that the homeowner, along with his wife and child, were asleep when they were woken by the suspect trying to break in through the front door. He got his gun, the release said.

After telling him several times to leave, the suspect broke a window in the front door. That's when the homeowner fired one round through the front door, striking the suspect. He fell to the ground and the homeowner got a first-aid kit while his wife called 911.

The homeowner performed life saving measures until deputies and EMS arrived. The suspect – who was not immediately identified – was taken to a hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition. The investigation is ongoing, according to the release.

During the investigation, officers discovered Oliver was assaulting a person inside the apartment. A gun, which Oliver had brought with him to the apartment, was taken by a teen under the age of 18.

According to police, the teen asked Oliver to stop several times before he fired a single shot hitting Oliver in the upper torso.

Dothan Police have consulted with Houston County District Attorney Russ Goodman and criminal charges are not expected at this time.

Oliver was out on bond on a prior shooting charge.

A Little Math

 President Trump signed the Big Beautiful Bill on Friday.  One of the things that bill dies is to reform Medicaid. Medicaid was originally designed for the po'folks, those who live below the poverty level.  So, lets do a little math.

Louisiana has approximately 4.6 million residents.  Approximately 18.9% are under the poverty line. By that metric alone, we should have about 869,000 on Medica.  With the Medicaid expansion under out last governor, we have about 1.5 million currently enrolled.   These are government figures, I didn't make them up, but it shows that Louisiana needs to do a better job getting people out of poverty.  And, it shows that there are a whole lot of people on Medicaid who aren't poverty stricken.

Other states have the same problem.  New Mexico, for example, has about 2.13 million residents, with about 375, 000 at the poverty line.   Their Medicaid enrollment is just over 985,000.  These figures are a quick Google, but probably pretty accurate.  New Mexico is a deep blue state, which might explain some things, but the Medicare enrollment is over twice the poverty rate.

The thing keeping this delicious feast from me is about 150 miles of road between my apartment and my son's place.
 
I can just about smell and taste it. Oh well, off to the dog park soon, then dinner back at my Spartan digs. That could be anything from a fast food burger, to one of the rib eye steaks from my freezer. Right now though, and probably when I eat whatever, all I can think about is that smoked feast my son made.

This 7/2/25 UPI article discusses a new study that concludes statins are underprescribed:
"More than 39,000 deaths, nearly 100,000 non-fatal heart attacks and up to 65,000 strokes in the U.S. could be prevented if people eligible for statins and other cholesterol-lowering drugs were taking them, researchers reported Monday in the Journal of General Internal Medicine....
"Along with warding off heart attacks and strokes, properly prescribed statins also could prevent every year nearly 88,000 heart bypass surgeries and procedures to reopen blocked or clogged arteries, researchers estimated."

I am glad I had the double bypass but if you can avoid it, it is better.

17th Century Inflation

I have just started reading Richard Ollard's This War Without an Enemy: A History of the English Civil Wars.  This book was recommended by my friend Joyce Malcolm, who is an English Civil War specialist.

Early on, he attributes this, at least in part, to a general inflation of prices in the 17th century throughout Europe.  This surprises me not in the least.  The core was the Spanish importation of gold and silver in mind-boggling quantities from the New World, much of it obtained by working Indian slaves to death.

The OBBB has a number of Medicaid cuts.  One of them cuts illegals off Medicaid.   You think this is odd?  We must assume that Medicaid is paying for illegals, because 20 states are now suing to be excused from providing Medicaid information to ICE.  7/1/25 Denver Post:
"Colorado and 19 other states sued the federal government Tuesday to prevent Medicaid data from being used for immigration enforcement.

"In June, the Department of Health and Human Services transferred data about people enrolled in Medicaid to the Department of Homeland Security, which includes Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The shared data included names, addresses, Social Security numbers, immigration status and information about medical claims made by residents of California, Illinois, Washington state and the District of Columbia."

Now, if you want to argue that illegal aliens deserve medical care, there is a plausible argument founded in a Christian commonwealth's duty to care for the poor.  But advocates for this point of view usually get pretty insistent that this is a secular society that barely tolerates Christianity (as long as you bake that cake!).  

Another argument is that providing care to the poor requires some care to make sure it is spent wisely.  Spending it on people who are not lawfully here seems unwise.

This song sums up the current Cold Civil War here on the shores of the New World*.  It also sums up the increasing Cold War between Western Europe** and the USA under the Trump Administration.  It's a fundamental disconnect between world views - us vs. them***.

All I can say is that God spared Donald Trump last summer for a purpose.  That statement probably bothers some people.

Today — and indeed this entire weekend — patriotic Americans celebrate the foresight, wisdom, and bravery of our Founding Fathers in declaring independence from an oppressive government. Independence Day is a truly American holiday, made possible by a well-armed, determined, and freedom-loving citizenry. The Fourth of July, our original “No Kings Day,” serves as both a celebration of liberty and a solemn reminder that freedom must be vigilantly protected.


Our forefathers were explicit in their intent: our rights are granted by our Creator, not by government. Power is legitimate only when it is derived from the consent of the governed. These timeless truths laid the foundation of a nation built on freedom. But today, those principles face constant threats — not only from foreign powers, but from within our borders, from citizens and non-citizens alike.

Enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution, America was built on the idea that all people are endowed with unalienable rights — life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These founding principles still exist today — for all.

Yet a vocal and aggressive minority — enabled by pandering politicians and a compliant media — seeks to erode the very fabric of American liberty. Under a distorted vision of “freedom,” they work to silence dissent, erase history, redefine language, and shame anyone who dares to disagree. Their actions reveal not a love of justice, but a deep hostility toward the foundational principles of our republic.

Yet, hope abounds. Today, millions of patriotic Americans are growing weary of the lies, the violence, and the constant smears on their character and beliefs. We are tired of being labeled as extremists simply for standing by the values enshrined in our founding documents — freedom, faith, personal responsibility, and equal rights for all.

Even amidst chaos and division, the light of liberty has not been extinguished. A growing movement seeks to return to the values of 1776, reaffirmed by the Constitution. This movement is not driven by hate, but by love — love for country, for liberty, and for future generations who deserve to inherit a free and united nation.

Thomas Jefferson, in a letter to Roger C. Weightman on June 24, 1826, reflected on the significance of this day:
For ourselves, let the annual return of this day forever refresh our recollections of these rights, and an undiminished devotion to them.
I, for one, am proud of my country. And I will not quietly accept efforts to dismantle it — whether by restricting my worship, infringing on my right to self-defense, or attempting to replace freedom with the tyrannical ideologies that history has already condemned.

So this Independence Day, don’t just wave a flag or light a firework. Reflect on what this nation stands for. Remember what was risked to create it. Celebrate America. Celebrate freedom. And above all — prepare to defend and preserve it for those who will inherit the nation we leave behind.

The recent Democratic Party mayoral primary election of Zohran Mamdani in New York City does not bode well. It illustrates that the Hard Left Democrats now have a stranglehold on New York City politics. I suspect the same for all of the East and West Coast Blue States, as well as Illinois. 18 USC 925(c) provides that the Attorney General can grant a person relief from disability (the "dis-ability" to legally possess a firearm under the law). This is especially important to those convicted of a federal offense, since there is no federal procedure to restore firearm rights or to restore civil rights (those lost by a conviction are all governed by state, not federal, law).

Historically, that function had been delegated by the AG to ATF, and from 1992 onward there was a rider put on ATF's budget forbidding it to use appropriated money to grant relief (except to corporations).

But the AG has issued revoking the delegation so that her office will handle the petitions. The budget rider only applies to ATF, and doesn't cover her office.

The language of the order makes it clear there's a new sheriff in town:

"In Executive Order 14206 of February 6, 2025 (Protecting Second Amendment Rights), the President reaffirmed our national commitment to "[t]he Second Amendment [as] an indispensable safeguard of security and liberty," and directed that "[w]ithin 30 days of the date of this order, the Attorney General shall examine all orders, regulations, guidance, plans, international agreements, and other actions of executive departments and agencies (agencies) to assess any ongoing infringements of the Second Amendment rights of our citizens." Consistent with this Order and with the Department's own strong support for all constitutional rights, including "the right of the people to keep and bear arms" enshrined in the Second Amendment, the Department has begun that review process in earnest..."

US Army SAW Program: HK23A1 and HK21A1

In 1957, the M14 rifle and M60 machine gun were adopted. The M14 program, which aimed to develop the M15 squad automatic rifle, was canceled in 1959. Later, the M14E2 was introduced as an interim solution to provide the infantry squads with a suitable solution. The United States Army Infantry School developed the M14E2 concept as a squad automatic weapon. This variant was issued in 1963, redesignated as M14A1 in 1966, and saw limited service during the Vietnam War. From the 1950s to the 1980s, there was no suitable replacement for the BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle), leaving infantry squads vulnerable and inadequate. During the Vietnam War, the M60 served as a company-level machine gun assigned to a platoon weapons squad.

This week, I want to take a look at some great drills to do at the range, which can incorporate the full spectrum of skills needed when it comes to carrying a concealed firearm. The NEW 10mm Extar Arms EP10 [GunCon 2025]

BallisticAviation  sits down with Josh from extarusa  to talk about their new 10mm variant of their large-format pistol. The EP series focuses mostly on being affordable, reliable and durable, with most of its components and frame being constructed entirely from various polymers. For critical components like the barrel and bolt, Extar USA makes all of their parts in-house for the EP9, EP45, and EP10, with a few parts here and there, like the trigger, contracted out to companies like Schmid triggers.

Today I ran some High Desert Cartridge Company .38 Special 148 grain HBWCs over my Garmin chronograph from 2 .357 Magnum revolvers.

First, from my S&W 640-1 with a 1-/7/8" (nominal 2") barrel, 10 shots averaged 753 FPS.



Second, from my S&W 66-2 with a 2.5" barrel, 8 shots averaged 788.7 FPS. For some reason 2 shots didn't register.



Everything else being equal, I would expect 25 - 50 FPS more velocity from a gun chambered in .38 Special, due to less freebore.

High Desert Cartridge Company advertises this load at 725 FPS from a 2" snubbie with 18" of penetration in ballistic gelatin.

In my opinion this would be an excellent carry load in .38 Special of .357 Magnum snubbie revolvers. It's controllable in rapid fire but will poke a clean hole all the way into the vitals.
